First Trimester / Dating Ultrasound

What is a dating scan?

This scan is done early in pregnancy to use measures to calculate the gestational age, or the age of the pregnancy. The crown-rump length, or CRL, is measured from one end of the foetus to the other.

When is it performed?

If you have irregular periods or are unclear about when your last menstrual period (LMP) occurred, this scan is typically performed. You might not know your LMP if you have been breastfeeding or if you just stopped using the oral contraceptive pill because of an atypical cycle.

In order to determine if the pregnancy is proceeding correctly, this scan may also be done if you are early in your pregnancy and have discomfort or bleeding (even if you have already had a scan or are certain of your most recent menstrual cycle).

How accurate is the pregnancy dating?

A scan performed between 6-11 weeks pregnancy/gestation is accurate to within 3 days.

What else does it show?

  • The quantity of infants
  • The baby’s heartbeat is present.
  • The pregnancy’s position (make sure it is inside the uterus and not outside, which is called an ectopic pregnancy)
  • The way the ovaries and uterus look

How is it done?

Trans abdominal ultrasonography, which uses a probe and gel on your skin to scan through your lower abdomen, can produce the majority of the pictures. You need a full bladder for this. A transvaginal ultrasound scan may be necessary if the pregnancy is early or if you need better pictures of your ovaries or uterus. Better pictures are possible because the internal probe is positioned closer to these tissues when it is carefully inserted into the vagina with a sterile protective sheath. This procedure is often less uncomfortable than a PAP smear.

Are there some occasions where I will have to return for a repeat early pregnancy scan?

The extent of your pregnancy will determine this. It could be too early to detect pregnant symptoms on ultrasound, even if your blood or urine test results are positive. Without any indication of a foetus or foetal heartbeat, a little fluid sac may be seen in the uterus prior to 5.5 weeks. In some cases, a follow-up scan one to two weeks later could be required to establish correct dates and confirm a viable pregnancy. Additionally, your physician will often compare the findings to blood testing (serum BHCG).
By six to seven weeks, the foetus is often visible (generally requiring transvaginal scanning) and its heartbeat is discernible.
